"Like Jesus we belong to the world living not for ourselves but for others. The joy of the Lord is our strength."
-Mother Theresa
2005-03-22 - The last days of Easter
Its Easter week. How can this be Easter, a season of celebration, when I feel like I’ve stepped back in time and had to watch Jesus walk to the cross? That happened 2 thousand years ago and this week he is coming back to remind us. We are so unjust in our “justice.” No one but he can give a fair trial and it is being proven in our own courts in our own county this very moment as we speak.
I found myself crying today while I was driving into work. Not because I’d gotten into a fight or because some one I knew had just died but because of a story I heard.
It’s about this nurse who watched a patient of hers whither away and there was nothing she could do to save her because she has a husband who waits for her to die. This women’s husband used to say horrible things to the nurse about wanting the money from her death or about how much he wanted her to go. He didn’t even want the nurse to comfort the women with a wash cloth so this women had to live her days in pain. The women hung on as long as she could. She is still struggling to hang on. She is still alive but not so much as she was when she was young.
The nurse talked about how the women used to talk. She would try to say words like, “Mommy,” “pain,” and “Hi.” Now you see none of that because the husband would never let her try to recover. He would rarely let the sick women see her family. He would scare the sick women and the nurse *bless her heart* would do all she could to keep the women alive after his visits. Years passed and the sick women continued to live so the husband waited. Three awfully long years passed and then he remembered that his wife once told him she wanted to die. It was shortly after he’d won a legal battle on the sick women’s behalf for medical maltreatment if I remember correctly. Well, he got a lawyer and told the courts what she had said. The courts believed him without a second guess because some doctors said she would never recover. The nurse and others were never even allowed to tell their side of the story because the woman is no criminal so why would she need some one to speak on her behalf?
Now she waits with no food and no water and no ability to say that after 15 years of this torture that she would like to die or to live but she is fighting. Since once I was on a hospital bed and the doctors had told my Mother I only had hours left I tend to believe that if you hang on then you are doing it for a reason. You are doing it because you want to live. You are doing it simply because you want to see the ones you care about again. I am living proof that given love miracles can and do happen. This woman might have once been the same.
She can still teach us a lesson. She is God’s child and he is speaking through her in many ways. Though evil brews around us when children murder other children at school, mothers are killing their babies, the courts are going against what the nations people republican and democrat vote into law, suicide is being celebrated and people who are supposed to be our leaders like the Pope and the President are ignored she is re-enacting one of the greatest feats a man has ever done and then she will die just like he did on her own version of the cross. Maybe it won’t be for our sins but I do believe that we who listen will be all the wiser on this Easter holiday.
It’s a sad day today. There is no arguing that matter. This may help you to open your eyes if you have them shut to my point-of-view: Affidavit of Carla Iyer
Please understand that even if this isn’t true that it should at least earn it’s day in court so that can be decided by some one who hopefully still has some honor left behind that black robe of theirs. Please listen to me for once on this issue! Someone please have some mercy and save her from her pain.
